Flavin Glover Collection
For
over fifty years, Cullman County native Flavin Glover has shared the joy of
quilting with national and international audiences. Glover learned to
quilt in traditional patchwork and log cabin quilting styles from her mother,
Nonnie Hudson Williams, and a neighbor, Vonda Lee Waldrep. In the 1980's
Glover designed a series of log cabin landscape quilts that introduced a new
generation of quilters to the traditional log cabin quilting block. Her
donation to the Alabama Department of Archives and History includes 22 quilts
and quilted garments that span Glover's quilting career, along with two string
patchwork quilts, one work apron, and one bonnet made by Nonnie Williams.
The collection also includes dozens of letters exchanged by her parents, Verlon Aurice Williams and Nonnie Hudson, which document their courtship and life in rural Cullman County in the 1920's. Several quilts from the Glover collection were on display in the Milo B. Howard Auditorium in mid-2025.
